Know your life

Firstly think about how a career can fit in with your current life.

If you’re going to be happy you need to prioritise what’s important to you in your life. It may be that currently it is your new career, which means that you can spend the majority of your time and money doing whatever it takes to reach your career goals. However, family, children, hobbies, volunteer work and many other factors can be more important to us than our career so you need to think about how a different career will fit in with your other commitments. There is no point following your dream career if it means you are not spending time on your personal life and it is making you unhappy.

Secondly think about how a career will enhance your life.

People often seek a career change because their lives have changed.

Do you want your career to offer a work-life balance? How will it accommodate this? Can you work from home to cut out the commute? Can you work part-time or reduce your hours?

Perhaps your at a stage in your life where you need more money? Have you thought about starting your own business?

Don’t compromise. Make sure your life and your new career are compatible. Happy people know that they can have more than one thing that they want, a dream career and a fulfilled personal life.

Make a list of the careers you feel passionate about which fit in with your current life or will enhance it
